Tile failures rarely start at the grout line. They start where water finds a path through the substrate or between layers. Laticrete waterproofing stops that path by creating a continuous membrane that sheds water back to the drain.
Before the membrane goes down, the substrate has to be flat, sound and ready to bond. That is where Laticrete underlayments come in. They level out minor imperfections and create a chemical bond with the waterproofing layer above, so you do not get delamination or hidden voids.

Assess the substrate and use case
We evaluate the substrate condition, the wet-area exposure and the tile layout to decide between Hydro Ban liquid membrane and the 9235 fabric-reinforced system.
Prepare and level with underlayment
The substrate is cleaned and primed, then a matched Laticrete underlayment is applied to bring the surface flat and create a stable base for the membrane.
Apply the waterproofing membrane
The Hydro Ban or 9235 membrane is applied at the specified thickness, with all seams, corners and transitions detailed and sealed per the Laticrete spec.
Set tile into Laticrete thinset
Tile or stone is embedded in a Laticrete thinset mortar that bonds chemically into the membrane, creating a unified assembly from substrate to finish.

Hydro Ban Liquid vs 9235 Fabric-Reinforced
Hydro Ban is a liquid-applied membrane that flows into corners and seals the substrate in a continuous layer. It works well for most shower walls and wet-room floors where the substrate is stable and the geometry is straightforward.
The 9235 fabric-reinforced system adds a woven fabric layer that bridges movement joints, reinforces corners and handles complex transitions. We choose 9235 when the assembly has multiple planes, movement potential or intricate detailing that needs extra durability.
Both pair with Laticrete underlayments and the same thinset family, so the entire stack is engineered to work together. This is the same integrated approach we use with Ardex systems.
