Why Concrete Slabs Fail in Michigan
Freeze-thaw cycles are the enemy. Water seeps into the surface, freezes, expands, and spalls the top layer. A slab that looks fine in July can be crumbling by February if the base wasn't compacted, the mix wasn't air-entrained, or the drainage wasn't planned. That's why the real work happens before the pour: excavation to remove soft soil, a gravel base laid and compacted in lifts, and a concrete mix designed to flex with the cold instead of crack under it.
Control joints cut at the right spacing and depth let the slab shrink in a controlled way. A good concrete sealer keeps water and de-icing salt from penetrating. The same principles apply to basement slabs and foundation walls. Get the base and the mix right, and the concrete lasts decades.
How it works
The Concrete Project Timeline
-
Site visit and written quote
We measure the area, assess the existing base, discuss finish options, and leave you with an itemised quote and a realistic start date.
-
Tear-out and base prep
If there's old concrete, we remove it. Then we excavate, grade, and compact a gravel base so the new slab sits on solid ground.
-
Forms, pour, and finish
Forms go down, concrete is placed and screeded level, then finished to your choice: broom, stamped, exposed aggregate, or polished.
-
Cure and handoff
We cut control joints, explain the cure schedule, and walk you through when the slab is ready for traffic and full use.
Three things to know
What Separates Good Concrete From Bad
The base is everything. A perfectly finished slab over a poorly compacted base will crack and settle. Proper excavation, gravel depth, and compaction in layers are non-negotiable. This is where most shortcuts happen, and where they fail.
The mix and the joints matter equally. Air-entrained concrete resists freeze-thaw. Control joints cut at the right spacing and depth let the slab move without random cracking. A garage floor epoxy or stamped patio is only as good as the slab underneath.
Sealing and maintenance keep it young. A quality sealer blocks water and salt. Our maintenance guide shows you how to keep your concrete looking new for years.
Common questions
Detroit Concrete Questions, Answered
Straight answers on cost, timing, durability and what to expect during a pour.
Our old driveway was cracked end to end and heaving by the garage. The crew tore it out, rebuilt the base properly, and poured a new broom-finish slab in a day. One winter later it is still dead flat, and the written quote was the final number.
They stamped a slate pattern across the whole patio and ran a walkway out to the fire pit. The colour matched the sample, the control joints are tucked into the pattern so you barely see them, and they cleaned up like they were never here.
I needed a shop floor that could take a two-post hoist and a winter of road salt off the truck. Polished and sealed, perfectly level, zero dust. They worked around my hours and the finish still looks new.
Footings and a foundation wall for a garage addition, all poured to the engineer's drawings. The inspector passed it on the first visit and they sent photos at every stage since I could not be on site. Easy to deal with start to finish.
