Fixing Detroit Driveways Without a Full Tear-Out
Cracks, spalling and surface wear don't always mean your driveway is done. Detroit Concrete assesses what can be patched, what needs resurfacing, and what truly requires replacement, then gives you an honest answer backed by a free written estimate. Most driveways that look bad are structurally sound underneath.
- Straight repair-or-replace assessment
- Patch, resurface, or full replacement
- Free written estimate, no obligation
Sound slab, tired surface
Why Driveway Repair Beats Replacement on a Solid Base
A driveway that looks worn out is not automatically a candidate for tear-out. If the slab sits level, the base is intact, and the damage is surface-level, repair is the smarter move. Cracks can be sealed, spalled edges can be patched, and pitted or discoloured concrete can be resurfaced.
The repair process starts with a clear assessment. We look for signs of base failure: heaving, settling, separation from steps or walks. If the slab is sound, we move forward with targeted fixes. Saw-cutting clean edges around damaged areas, removing failed concrete, rebuilding the base if needed, and pouring a patch that bonds to the existing slab. For widespread surface wear, a thin overlay across the whole driveway gives a uniform, fresh look without the cost and time of a full replacement.
When repair is not the answer, we say so. If the base has failed or the slab is moving, a new concrete driveway is the honest call. We also offer stamped finishes, exposed aggregate, and protective sealing to keep repairs lasting.
The repair sequence
How Detroit Concrete Repairs Driveways Step by Step
-
On-site evaluation
We inspect the slab for base movement, crack patterns, spalling, and surface condition. This determines whether repair, resurfacing, or replacement is the right path forward.
-
Saw-cut and excavate
For localized damage, we make clean saw-cuts around the failed area, remove the bad concrete, and expose the base below so the new patch can bond to sound material.
-
Prepare and reinforce
The base is compacted or rebuilt as needed. Rebar or wire mesh is placed if the patch is large. The cavity is cleaned and primed for concrete adhesion.
-
Pour, finish, and cure
Concrete is placed at the same thickness as the surrounding slab, finished to match the existing texture (brushed, exposed, or stamped), and cured on schedule. Full resurfacing covers the entire slab in one continuous pour.
Overlay and protection
Resurfacing and Sealing Complete the Job
When a driveway is structurally sound but cosmetically tired across the whole surface, resurfacing is cleaner than multiple spot patches. A thin concrete overlay is applied over a prepared slab, creating a uniform, fresh finish that reads like a new driveway from the street. No seams, no colour variation, no patchwork appearance.
After repair or resurfacing, driveway sealing is the next step. A quality sealer closes the surface against water infiltration and de-icing salt, which are the main culprits behind freeze-thaw damage and spalling. Resealing every few years keeps the concrete protected and extends the life of your repair investment.
If the assessment reveals the slab cannot be saved, we handle the full replacement. Choose from brushed finishes, coloured concrete, exposed aggregate, or stamped patterns for your new driveway.

Driveway Repair Questions Answered
Repair versus replacement, cracks, spalling, resurfacing and what makes sense to fix in Detroit.
Quoted a resurface instead of a full tear-out because the slab was still sound. Saved us thousands and the new finish looks like a new driveway from the street.
Spalled corner at the curb cut, fixed cleanly with a colour-matched patch. The seam is barely visible and it has not cracked again through the winter.
They were honest that part of the driveway needed replacing because the base had failed, and the other part could be repaired. Did both, exactly as they explained.
Patched several surface cracks before they could grow. The seal is back on, the slab looks decades younger, and they said it should outlast me at this point.
