Concrete Sidewalks & Walkways in Detroit

A walkway gets walked every day and shovelled all winter, so it has to be flat, properly sloped and grippy underfoot. Detroit Concrete forms concrete sidewalks and walkways on a compacted base, sets the slope so water runs off, and finishes them broom or decorative to match the home. New paths, decorative upgrades and repair, all with a free written estimate.

  • Formed to the right slope and grade

Underfoot every day

What a Concrete Walkway Has to Get Right

A walkway looks simple, but it has three jobs at once: stay flat so nobody trips, slope just enough that water and meltwater run off, and grip underfoot when it is wet or icy. Get the slope wrong and a path becomes a sheet of ice every thaw.

We form a concrete sidewalk on a compacted base, set a deliberate cross-slope, and finish it broom for traction. Control joints are cut on layout so seasonal movement follows a clean line.

When the path is also a feature, a decorative walkway in stamped or exposed-aggregate concrete ties it to the patio and the driveway. Tired paths get walkway repair instead of a tear-out.

How it works

How We Form a Concrete Walkway in Detroit

  1. Walk the route and grade

We walk the path with you, confirm the route, the width and the cross-slope, and check how it drains away from the house and other surfaces.

  2. Excavate and compact

The line is excavated, a granular base is laid and compacted, and forms are set to the finished slope and elevations.

  3. Pour and texture

We place the mix, screed it flat, and finish it broom for traction or stamped and exposed-aggregate where the walkway is decorative.

  4. Joint, cure and tie in

Control joints are cut on layout, the path is cured, and it is tied cleanly into the steps, driveway or patio it connects.

More than a path

Decorative Walkways That Tie the Yard Together

A plain concrete sidewalk does the practical job, but a path is also the line your eye follows across the yard. A decorative walkway in stamped or exposed-aggregate concrete turns that line into a feature.

We match the pattern and colour to what is already poured so a new walkway reads with the patio, the steps and the driveway instead of against them. And when an older path is heaved or cracked but the base is sound, walkway repair brings it back without the cost of starting over.

Common questions

Sidewalk & Walkway Questions, Answered

Slope, finishes, drainage and repair for concrete sidewalks and walkways in Detroit.

A slight cross-slope, usually around two percent, lets rain and meltwater run off instead of pooling and then freezing. A flat or back-sloped path becomes an ice hazard every thaw, so we build the slope into the base and forms.
A broom finish is the standard for traction. Decorative walkways in exposed-aggregate or textured stamped concrete also stay grippy wet, while a smooth trowel finish does not and is not used outdoors.
Yes. We match the finish, pattern and colour to the driveway, patio or steps already in place so the new sidewalk reads as part of the yard, not a patch.
Often, yes. If the base is still sound, walkway repair can re-level, patch or resurface the path for far less than a full tear-out. We confirm the base on a free visit before recommending either.
Most walkways are placed in a day. You can walk on it within 24 to 48 hours, with the exact timing in the cure schedule we hand over. Decorative finishes are sealed once the slab has cured.

New front walkway that finally drains. The old one iced over every winter. They built a proper slope into it and it has been clear since.

Stamped a walkway from the driveway to the back gate and matched it to our patio. You would never guess it was poured years after the patio.

Our side-yard path was heaved and cracked. They re-levelled and repaired it instead of pushing a full replacement. Honest and tidy work.

Broom finish, dead flat, and the joints line up with the steps and driveway. Small job done with the same care as a big one.
