Detroit Polished Garage Floors, Ground Hard, Nothing to Peel
Detroit Concrete takes your existing slab through progressive diamond grinding, locks the surface with a chemical densifier, and delivers a hard, low-sheen finish. No coating layer means no peeling, no recoat schedule, no stripping. Free written estimate on every job.
- Slab densified, not coated
- Satin or low-sheen finish options
- Free written estimate, firm finish date
What the process actually does
Your Polished Concrete Garage Floor, From Raw Slab to Finished Surface
Most garage floor options, whether epoxy, polyaspartic, or metallic epoxy, sit on top of the concrete as a separate layer. That layer is what eventually chips, peels, or needs stripping. Polished concrete works differently: the slab itself becomes the finished surface, ground down and chemically hardened so there is no separate layer to fail.
The sequence starts with a density check on your existing slab. If old coatings are present, they come off first. Diamond tooling then works through progressively finer grits, cutting away surface imperfections and opening the concrete matrix. A penetrating densifier goes in next, reacting with the slab to close the pores and harden the surface from within. The final buff brings the sheen up to the level you selected, typically a satin finish for a working garage rather than a high-gloss showroom look. A stain-protective treatment rounds out the system, keeping road salt, motor oil, and brake fluid from soaking into the densified surface.
The result is a floor that handles dropped tools, hot tires, and Michigan winters without a coating between you and the concrete. For a side-by-side look at all finish options, see the full garage floor comparison, or check the concrete cost guide for budget context.
Step by step
How Detroit Concrete Polishes a Garage Slab
-
Slab assessment and prep
Before any grinding starts, we check the slab for density, surface damage, and existing coatings. Peeling or failed coatings are stripped back to bare concrete so the diamond tooling works directly on the slab.
-
Progressive diamond grinding
We run through a sequence of diamond grits, coarse to fine, cutting away surface irregularities and exposing the concrete matrix evenly across the floor. Each pass refines what the previous one opened up.
-
Chemical densification
A penetrating densifier is applied and worked into the open slab. It reacts with the concrete to fill pores and harden the surface from within, producing a matrix that resists hot tires, dropped tools, and road salt without any coating on top.
-
Final buff and stain protection
The floor is buffed to the agreed sheen level, satin being the most common choice for a working Detroit garage. A stain-protective treatment is applied last, guarding against oil, fuel, and brake fluid before we hand the space back.
Choosing the right finish
Picking Polished Concrete Over Epoxy, Polyaspartic, or Metallic
The question most Detroit homeowners ask is straightforward: do you want a coating on your slab, or do you want the slab itself to be the floor? Coatings, including epoxy and polyaspartic systems, perform well for years and offer more decorative range. Polished concrete trades that decorative flexibility for a floor that simply does not have a coating lifecycle to manage.
For garages used as working shops, EV charging bays, or spaces where long-term low maintenance matters more than a flake pattern or metallic swirl, polished is the practical call. The densified slab handles daily vehicle traffic, tool drops, and Michigan road-salt runoff without anything to scratch through or recoat. If your current floor has a failed coating that needs to come off first, garage floor repair handles the strip-back, and polishing can proceed from the exposed concrete. You can also compare polished residential floors if you are considering the same finish inside the home.

Questions About Polished Garage Floors in Detroit
Durability, salt resistance, slip safety, and cost for densified concrete garage slabs.
Polished instead of coated because we did not want to recoat in five years. Damp mop is the entire maintenance routine and the floor has been rock solid for two winters.
Tougher than the epoxy at our last house. The stain protector handles oil drips, dropped tools chip nothing, and hot tires leave no marks.
Low-sheen satin finish, exactly what we wanted for the working garage. No mirror gloss, no slippery surface, just a clean hard floor that does its job.
They tested the slab density first and confirmed it would polish well. The result is a finished floor that has nothing to peel, no recoat schedule to track.
